Amityville was settled for the first time way back in the 1600’s and became the Incorporated Village of Amityville in 1894. The village was a farming and fishing community when it was originally settled and was a big summer resort area with hotels.
Today, it is known as a great place to live, raise a family, and begin a business. The village is proud to still have a thriving downtown Central Business District. Amityville is nestled in the boundaries of the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York. There are roughly 10,000 residents. Located right on the water, the village is picturesque and offers gorgeous views.
The village is famous as the setting for author Jay Anson’s novel, The Amityville Horror, published in 1977. Based on a real-life murder case in 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed six members of his family in their home on Ocean Avenue. DeFeo, Jr claimed that voices inside the house told him he had to do it.
A family moved in a year later to the house and had to move out less than a month later because the family was being terrorized by paranormal activity. The popular story led to 9 different movies being released from 1979-2005.
Points of interest in the village start with The Triangle in downtown Amityville. Built back in 1892, The Triangle is formed from a fork in the road of Broadway and Park Avenue. The triangle area of land sits in the center of Amityville. The Triangle was named “Memorial Triangle” in honor of those who have served the village.
Other popular areas in Amityville include the Amityville Historical Society & Lauder Museum which houses the items, memorabilia, and stories about the history of the village. The Amityville Beach, Mike James Courts at Bolden Mack Park, 9/11 Memorial Park, and Avon Lake are a few of the numerous points of interest that make the village great.
Plenty of notable figures have resided in Amityville including the famous female sharpshooter Annie Oakley, MLB player Tony Graffanino, NBA player Mike James, Al Capone’s wife Mae, comedian Alec Baldwin and more.
